Back by popular demand: Matthew Broderick is returning to Morristown to reprise last January’s reading of Truman Capote’s A Christmas Memory.
Also back: Leading lady Janet Broderick— his sister and rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.
Showtimes are at 6 pm and 8 pm on Friday, Dec. 14, 2018, at the church. Admission is $25.
“Matthew wanted to do it. He really enjoyed it last time,” said Janet, noting that her brother is flying back from a film shoot in New Mexico for the occasion.
Once again, they will be directed by Tony-winning director Michael Wilson (The Trip to Bountiful).
In past years, Janet Broderick has hosted parlor readings of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and W.H. Auden’s Christmas Oratorio, which also featured her brother.
Famed for his starring roles in the films Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Glory and The Producers, Matthew Broderick, 56, won Tony Awards for Brighton Beach Memoirs and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.
Published in Mademoiselle magazine in 1956, Capote’s autobiographical short story “is a truly Valentine-like reminiscence of the sweet and far-away relationship between a Capotesque little old lady aged ‘sixty-something’ and a boy named Buddy,” preparing for what will be their last Christmas together,” wrote the New York Times.
Wilson suggested this adaptation of A Christmas Memory by a friend from Houston’s Ally Theatre, where the production became a holiday favorite.
The story has been adapted for television twice. A 1967 version starring Geraldine Page and Donnie Melvin and narrated by Capote won two Emmys and a Peabody Award. In 1997, Patty Duke and Eric Lloyd played the leads.
Despite single-digit weather, audiences flocked to St. Peter’s Great Hall for both performances in January. Check out our video clips here.
St. Peter’s is at the corner of Maple Avenue and Miller Road. More information is here, or at 973-538-0555, x114.
“Also, in every letter she encloses a dime wadded in toilet paper.”
Someone should tell Matthew that the word “wadded” is not pronounced “weighted.”
