Bria Skonberg is becoming a local favorite.
A few years ago this Canadian import made her east coast debut at the Bickford Theatre in Morris Township. (Where she returns in November.)
On Saturday, she made her second appearance on the Morristown Green, at the 8th annual Morristown Jazz & Blues Festival.
Here is video showcasing her innovative style. Listen to how she re-imagines the Beatles’ Blackbird:
And then dive Down in the Deep, an original Skonberg composition:
She is backed by Evan Artzen (clarinet), Mathis Picard (piano), Gabe Schneider (guitar), Endea Owens (bass) and Darrian Douglas (drums).
How does Skonberg find the stamina to play trumpet and sing in summer heat?
“Keep those lungs happy and healthy,” she said. That means drinking lots of water, and jogging (in the shade, preferably).
Playing and singing are “both about air support, really. So I just try to stay focused, breathe deeply, and be good to your body.”
And onstage, channel that solar energy.
“I like my music hot!” Skonberg said.
