Hundreds came to the historic Morristown Green on a steamy Wednesday afternoon to wish the United States a happy 242nd birthday.
They heard a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence, razzed King George, and saw a demonstration of musketry.
A handful of spectators even engaged in a bit of spirited political debate that would not have felt out of place in 1776.
Police Chief Pete Demnitz estimated the crowd size at 600.
The festivities, promoted by the Morris County Tourism Bureau and the Morristown National Historical Park, kicked off with a morning hike at Acorn Hall, and a rousing organ concert of patriotic music by Joshua Stafford at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Morristown. A tour of the Revolutionary-era graveyard behind the Presbyterian Church came later.
