This is going to be one busy weekend in Greater Morristown!

You can meet Frederick Douglass, watch a Civil War skirmish, picnic with future leaders, and browse arts and crafts in the sunshine.

THURSDAY, JUNE 7, 2018:

The New Jersey Division of Taxation presents a free tax seminar for small business owners and entrepreneurs, at 10 am at the Morristown & Township Library. At One Miller Road, Morristown.

At noon, the Morristown & Township Library hosts a Beach Party Picnic, for ages 2-5. Bring a beach blanket and lunch, for stories , crafts and games. At One Miller Road, Morristown.

At 7 pm, the Morristown & Township Library kicks off its Pride Month film series with the Chilean movie A Fantastic Woman/Una Mujer Fantastica (2017, R-rating). Free. Subtitled in English. Light refreshments.A Fantastic Woman/Una Mujer Fantastica poster

The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey in Madison has extended Molière’s comedy Tartuffe for one more series of shows, starting at 8 pm. We rarely endorse events–but this comedy is a must-see. Two hours fly by in blur of laughter. Tickets: $29 to $69. At Drew University, 36 Madison Ave., Madison, 973-408-5600.

FRIDAY, JUNE 8:

Morning Yoga with Munah Hayes returns to the Morristown & Township Library at 9:30 am. Free. Bring a yoga mat. At One Miller Road, Morristown.

See tomorrow’s Oscar-winning directors tonight, from 7 pm to 10 pm at the sixth annual Morristown High School Film Festival. Free. In the media center, 50 Early St.

The Minstrel’s revamped open stage offers two stages, to ensure everyone gets a shake at performing. Arrive at 7 pm to sign up. Admission: $5. At the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morris Township.

SATURDAY, JUNE 9:

The Morris Plains Farmers Market is back, from 9 am to 2 pm every Saturday through Oct. 6, 2018, on Merchant’s Block, next to the Model Railroad Club.

morris plains farmers market flyer 2018The 28th annual Morristown Fine Arts and Crafts Festival comes to the Vail Mansion lawn from 10 am to 5 pm today and Sunday, rain or shine. Sponsored by the Morris County Art Association. Free admission. At 110 South St. Call (973)267-1722 for more.

The annual Civil War encampment returns to Historic Speedwell from 10 am to 5 pm. See musket drills, a battle reenactment, exhibits, story time, and a quilting demonstration.  Admission: $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, and $5 for children. At 333 Speedwell Ave., Morristown.

Nicole’s Broadway Dance Company of East Hanover struts its stuff at Morristown’s Mayo Performing Arts Center at 11 am and 5:30 pm.  Tickets: $20. At 100 South St., 973-539-8008.

NBDC Dance CoThe nonprofit Our Youth Their Future hosts its ninth annual Youth Rally at Morristown’s Cauldwell Playground, from noon to 6 pm. Entertainment by Pam Underhill, Ryo and Shannon Songbird Gibbons, plus two basketball games, a moonbounce, face painting, raffles, food, and more. Free.

Morristown’s Bethel AME Church, which turns 175 this year, is joining with neighboring churches in a “Juneteenth” celebration, marking the official end of slavery after the Civil War. From 1 pm to 3 pm, activities on the Morristown Green will include Kim and Reggie Harris performing stories and songs of freedom (2 pm), and Frederick Douglass re-enactor Fred Morsell. Free; free parking and shuttles available.

The Juneteenth events continue from 3:30 pm to 5 pm with a public discussion, Journey to the Beloved Community: Community Conversation on Race, at the Morristown United Methodist Church. Free, and free childcare for participants. At 50 S. Park Place.

The Juneteenth celebration continues from 5 pm to 9 pm at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, with music, family activities, food, and an outdoor movie. Free. At 36 South St.


SUNDAY, JUNE 10:

The Civil War Weekend continues at Historic Speedwell from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  See Saturday entry for details.

The 28th annual Morristown Fine Arts and Crafts Festival concludes at the Vail Mansion lawn from 10 am to 5 pm. See Saturday entry for details.

Great Swamp Music Fest logoThe first Great Swamp, Great Music Festival runs from 1 pm to 5 pm at the Hartley Farms Polo Field in Harding. Featuring music by Hub Hollow, The Gammon Brothers, Not Enough Jeffs, and Stomp Box; food vendors, beer and wine for those 21 and older, to benefit the Great Swamp Watershed Association. Tickets: $20 in advance ($25 at the gate) for adults, $10 for students, children 13 and under, free. At 9 Hartley Farms Road. Call 973-538-3500.

Explore the Chinese art of Tai Chi, at 1:30 pm at the Morristown & Township Library with Master Gang Huang. These free classes are open to all abilities. No registration required. At One Miller Road, Morristown.
