THURSDAY, MAY 3, 2018:

Cheer for Morris Habitat Hammers for Heroes — community volunteers framing a home for former Army paratrooper and Afghanistan veteran John Freudenberg. Volunteers will be hard at work from 9 am to 4 pm today and Friday at Beyer Ford, 170 Ridgedale Ave. in Morris Township. Freudenberg and his young family eventually will move into the house in Mine Hill.

Platinum Minds
Platinum Minds

Platinum Minds will honor George Martin, chairman of the Morris County Urban League, with its 2018 Community Leader Award, and will hear from Marc Demetriou, author of Lessons From My Grandfather, starting with cocktails at 6 pm and dinner at 6:45 pm, at the Olde Mill Inn, 225 Rt. 202, Basking Ridge. FRIDAY, MAY 4:

Morning Yoga with Munah Hayes returns to the Morristown & Township Library at 9:30 am. Free. Bring a yoga mat. At One Miller Road, Morristown.

The Morristown & Township Library presents a free evening of selections from The Mikado by Gilbert & Sullivan performed by Savoy Faire from Light Opera of New Jersey, at 7 pm.  All ages welcome. Light refreshments. At One Miller Road, Morristown.

SATURDAY, MAY 5:

Volunteer Days kick off at Grow It Green Morristown’s Urban Farm at Lafayette, from 9 am to 2 pm. During the growing season, the nonprofit needs help starting seeds, weeding, harvesting, staffing the farm stand, building infrastructure for gardening projects, and so forth. Behind the Lafayette Learning Center at 31 Hazel St.

The Friends of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum host their 23rd annual plant sale, from 9 am to 5 pm, and again on Sunday, at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum, 353 East Hanover Ave., Morris Township. Call 973-326-7601.

The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) present a community outreach program, The Law and Your Community, from 10 am until noon at Morristown’s Calvary Baptist Church. The focus is how to safely navigate traffic stops. Free. At 10 Martin Luther King Ave.

Relay for Life LogoThe Greater Morristown Relay for Life runs from 4 pm to 11 pm at the Morristown Armory, 430 Western Ave. in Morris Township. More details are here, and at 973-285-8030.

The cyclists from Team 26, who are making their sixth annual ride from Newtown CT to Washington DC to lobby for tougher gun laws, will stop in Morristown for a 5 pm rally at town hall, 200 South St. Scheduled speakers include survivors of gun violence, Rector Cynthia Black of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, and high school organizers of the Morristown March for Our Lives. Local riders can join a bike escort as the cyclists depart on Sunday at 8 am.

The Wind of the Spirit Immigrant Resource Center is staging a 5 pm rally on the Morristown Green to show support for TPS recipients from Honduras, Nepal, Haiti and El Salvador whose status has been, or soon will be, revoked. The U.S. granted Temporary Protected Status two decades ago, in some cases, to people fleeing natural disasters and political upheavals. Forcing them to return will splinter families, disrupt local economies and endanger many TPS recipients, according to Wind of the Spirit. TPS holders are scheduled to speak.

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Morristown hosts a Kentucky Derby Party, as its annual Vestry fundraiser. Doors open at 5 pm. Door Prizes, games, a silent auction, and a 50/50 drawing; childcare provided for duration of the event. Admission: $35. At 121 South St., 973-538-0555.

SUNDAY, MAY 6:

Team 26 resumes its bike journey to Washington DC from Morristown town hall at 8 am. See Saturday entry for details.
