From Temple B’nai Or:

On Saturday, April 21, 2018, Temple B’nai Or held its Tikkun Olam Gala at the Westin Governor Morris Hotel in Morristown.

Temple B’nai Or began the tradition of honoring people for their commitment to the Jewish principle of Tikkun Olam, Repairing the World, back in 2003. The Award is given to Temple members in recognition of their exemplary service to Temple and to the greater community, both Jewish and general.

Michele Murray, president of TBO’s Board of Trustees, said: “Tikkun Olam Award recipients are known for their tremendous devotion to others, for the kindness of their hearts and for their tireless giving of time, expertise and resources. This award is given to those who do not seek out recognition, but do what they do because it comes from their hearts and from their deep sense that it is our obligation to do for others and help make this a better world.”

This year’s recipients were Jackie and Larry Horn, Poppy and Richard Segal and Marcie and Glenn Yarnis. The three couples have devoted countless years of commitment to Temple B’nai Or, Morristown Memorial Hospital, the Community Soup Kitchen, Women’s American ORT, NJPAC, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, St. Barnabas Medical Center, Summit Speech School for the Deaf and the Morris Educational Foundation, to name just a few.

“Richard and I were taught by our parents that it was our job to help others and we are proud to have carried on this tradition and passed that mindset on to our children and grandchildren,” Poppy Segal said.

Larry Horn called this “a full circle moment. When you receive an award from a Temple that you love and support, from your children who you are so proud of and share the message of caring for those around you, it is what Jackie and I believe in whole-heartedly.”

Marcie Yarnis implored the crowd to continue to volunteer and support the Temple and all the great works coming out of TBO, as she did over the last three years chairing a major effort to renovate the Temple’s sanctuary to make it accessible to all.

Previous recipients of this award are Fran Rossoff, Josephine & Gerald Aresty, Lorainne & Jerome Aresty, Linda & Bill Blatt, Susan & Michael Miller, Wendy & Gordon Kiel, Ellie & Herb Berman, Ilene & Bruce Jacobs and Amy & Jay Oyer.

Committee co-chairs Karen Anolick and Amy Noble praised the amazing team that put this event together to honor these deserving honorees and support the fundraising goals of Temple B’nai Or.
