Morristown High School will become a global destination on April 26, 2018.

Melanin Minds, the school’s first African-American culture and social activism club, is hosting a Multicultural Night from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm in the MHS cafeteria.

This relatively new club already has made an impact in the community, promoting awareness of social justice issues. Club members recently met with the Morris School District board to change the entire K-12 history curriculum to include more African-American history in core history courses.

“We like to educate students on African-American culture while encouraging them to use their voices to make positive change not only within our school, but in the community,” explains MHS senior Bella Simon, president and co-founder of the club.

“We also emphasize that there is power in numbers, and we can make a difference together.”

“After hearing about some racial events that occurred at the Frelinghuysen Middle School, we wanted to give the students affected the right platform to discuss the matter,” says Simon.

“We believed that the students there, especially at their age, should be ready to voice their opinions. For that reason, we established the first FMS African-American culture club so students there can speak out.”

The Passport to Our World event aims not only to celebrate the multitude of nationalities in Morristown, but also to raise money to continue the club’s community endeavors.

“We will be representing all different types of countries and cultures through international cuisine, music, dance, and cultural activities to begin appreciating all the diversity we have at MHS!” says Simon, who will attend the University of Maryland this fall.

Attendees should come dressed appropriately, in clothing that represents their culture and heritage. Entree is free; each plate of international delicacies costs $2. Donations would be greatly appreciated to support the activism and accomplishments of the club. Come and show the Morristown community your culture!
