Who’s running in the primaries in Greater Morristown

Monday was the filing deadline for the June 5, 2018, primary.

CONGRESS, 11TH DISTRICT

Five Republicans and five Democrats are vying for the chance to run for the seat being vacated by 12-term Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, a Republican.

The GOP candidates are state Assemblyman Jay Webber of Morris Plains, Martin Hewitt of Morris Township, Patrick Allocco of Morris Township, Antony Ghee of Totowa and Peter DeNeufville of Chatham Township.

For the Democrats, the contenders are Mikie Sherrill of Montclair, Tamara Harris of West Orange, Mitchell Cobert of Morristown, Alison Heslin of Morristown, and Mark Washburne of Mendham.

FREEHOLDERS

Three, three-year terms for Morris County Freeholder are being contested. On the Republican side, incumbents Deborah Smith of Denville and John Cesaro of Parsippany are seeking re-election.

Former Freeholder William “Hank” Lyon wants another crack. Also in the race: John Kricus of Washington Township; Aura Dunn, a Mendham Borough resident who works in Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen’s Morristown office; Stephen Shaw of Mountain Lakes; and Robert Peluso of Parsippany.

On the Democratic side, Morristown First Lady Mary Dougherty is running, with Rupande Mehta of Denville and Richard Corcoran of Boonton. Vanessa Brown of Mendham Township also is vying for a nomination.

Morris County Clerk Ann Grossi of Parsippany is seeking her second term. The Republican is unopposed in the primary. In the fall, she will face Democrat Shalini “Shala” Gagliardi of Chatham Township.

MORRIS TOWNSHIP

Two three-year committee seats are being contested in Morris Township.

Bruce Sisler, a Republican, seeks re-election. Committeeman Matheu Nunn is stepping down; Joseph Calvanelli will run for his seat on the GOP side.

Four Democrats will run in the primary. They include former Committeeman Jeff Grayzel, who is running with Tara Olivo-Moore as the “Democrats for Morris Township.” Mark Gyorfy and Daniel Falkner are running as the “Morris Township Democratic Committee Inc.” team.

MORRIS PLAINS

In Morris Plains, where Mayor Frank Druetzler, a Republican, is calling it quits after 32 years, his four-year term will be sought in November by borough council incumbents Salvatore Cortese (GOP) and Jason Karr (Democrat).

Two three-year council seats also will be contested in the fall. The Democratic candidates are Christina Genest and Jessica Prater. The Republicans are Catherine Kelly and Dennis Wagner.

Morristown does not have any elected positions in play this year.
