It’s a home with a history. And a future–for the winning bidder.
On Oct. 11, 2017, Morristown officials will accept bids for a former group residence at 38 Headley Road.
The ranch-style house would seem ideal for someone who needs lots of space: Six bedrooms, three bathrooms, basement and garage on a half-acre lot.
The minimum bid is $500,000. Only all-cash offers will be accepted.
Interior tours are scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 4, between 11 am and 1 pm. Email here if you plan to attend.
Town Administrator Jillian Barrick will accept sealed bids on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at noon in room 201 of town hall, at 200 South St. A 10 percent deposit is due at the close of bidding, and full payment is due within 30 days of bid acceptance.
NEW START FOR TROUBLED BOYS HOME
Built in 1958, the house is near Route 287 and the Peck School, and is a short walk to downtown.
A couple quietly ran a group home there, starting in 1980. Problems began when the Pennsylvania-based Devereux Foundation assumed control. By 2014, neighbors had lodged scores of complaints about poor supervision, maintenance issues and alarming encounters with wandering youths.
The operation closed in 2015, according to town Administrator Jillian Barrick. Last year the town council authorized spending $505,000 to acquire the property. It’s zoned as a private residence; a home-based business at the site would require zoning board approvals.
Correction: An earlier version of this story mistakenly reported the home has nearly 22,000 square feet. That is the lot size.
Thanks for catching that. It’s been corrected.
Note: The lot size is 22,000 square feet, not the home.
