A 1.7-magnitude earthquake struck Greater Morristown on Monday evening.

The epicenter was just over a mile to the south / southwest of Morristown, with a depth of about three miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

UPDATE: The U.S.G.S. later placed the epicenter just to the west of Morristown, in the vicinity of Morris Plains.

Area residents reported hearing a loud boom around 6:35 pm.

“Loud boom and a shake. Thought something blew up,” Michael Cumming posted on the Township’s Facebook page.

Ursel Irwin reported that it felt “like someone slammed my front door real hard and the house shook.”

Maureen Carroll Kennedy of the Township went outside to see if someone had hit a pole, or if a tree came down.

Some 50 people from the Morristown zip code, which includes much of Morris Township, responded to the U.S.G.S. Thirteen more from Denville, 10 from the Greystone Park area of Morris Plains and Parsippany and 10 from Mendham also responded online.

People from Randolph, Bernardsville, Madison and Dover also experienced the quake, according to the U.S.G.S.

By comparison, the earthquake that killed hundreds in Mexico earlier this month had a magnitude of 8.2.

“Earthquakes with magnitude of about 2.0 or less are usually called microearthquakes; they are not commonly felt by people and are generally recorded only on local seismographs,” the U.S.G.S. says on its website.
