On Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017, at 6:45 p.m., the Morristown and Morris Township Library, 1 Miller Road, Morristown, will show The Rule, the acclaimed documentary by Emmy-nominated, award-winning filmmakers, Marylou & Jerome Bongiorno.

The film details how the Benedictine monks of Newark Abbey educate and prepare inner city youth for life.  Nearly 100 percent of St. Benedict’s Prep students, predominantly African-American and Latino young men, are accepted into college.

The Bongiornos learned while making this film that, for inner city youth, cognitive skills are impeded by a dysfunctional environment created by poverty.  Inner city schools must be committed to helping students overcome this dysfunction so that the process of education can begin.

At St. Benedict’s Prep, this commitment includes protracted counseling as well as a year-round residence for the most vulnerable students.  Following the movie, we will have a question and answer period with the filmmakers, via Skype.

Contact the North Jersey History and Genealogy Center if you have any questions, 973-538-3473, or njhgc@jfpl.org.
