Jimmy Carter was president. Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours album topped the Billboard charts. And Reggie Jackson and Billy Martin almost duked it out in the Yankees dugout at Fenway Park.

Locally, the year 1977 was memorable for another reason: Karen Carman started working for Morris Township.

The Morristown High School graduate (’75) went to the Katharine Gibbs School, and then got a job as secretary to the Township board of health. For many years sheworked as an executive secretary to the municipal Administrator; in 2009, she became the Township’s purchasing agent.

“She has given her utmost to the Township of Morris, to the end that all citizens have benefited from her experience, faithfulness and dedication,” Mayor Bruce Sisler said last week during a ceremony honoring Carman at the Township Committee meeting.

Committeeman Peter Mancuso noted that he joined the Committee in 1977. “We were rookies together,” he told Carman, praising her for doing an “exemplary job.”

“It’s been a wonderful 40 years,” said Carman, who was accompanied by her husband Mark. “It’s been an honor to serve everybody, and I thank you very much.”
