Vance Gilbert, who can pivot from poignant to playful in less than a quarter-note, will headline at this year’s Folk Project Acoustic Getaway, a potpourri of concerts, jam sessions and workshops over the Memorial Day weekend, in a wooded setting less than an hour from Morristown.
Run by the same people who host the weekly Minstrel series in Morris Township, the Acoustic Getaway has been named a Top 50 U.S. A Roadside Attraction by Acoustic Guitar Magazine.
“It’s more like a community social than a huge festival,” said Mark Schaffer, who coordinates the event for the Folk Project.
“There’s a warm, no-pressure community of people who come to relax and hang with the musicians. It’s like a small, three-day vacation village that’s filled with music, local music makers, and some very talented top-notch musicians.”
The Getaway starts on Friday night, May 26, 2017, at a camp near Hackettstown, and continues with full days of music, food and fun on Saturday, May 27, and Sunday, May 28. It’s possible to linger on Monday for a little more jamming, too.
The weekend will include performances and workshops by Gilbert, poet Connor Garvey, singer-songwriter Dave Nachmanoff, the duo Ryanhood, Cajun fiddler champ Gina Forsyth, the Heather Pierson Acoustic Trio, singer Roia Rafieyan, and Morristown Green favorite Christine DeLeon.
Lots of sing-alongs and impromptu jam sessions are anticipated. Workshops are geared for the “experienced musician, the casual listener, and the rank beginner,” Schaffer said.
And everything is rain-proof, with indoor venues to complement the leafy trails.
Pre-registration is required. Weekend passes that include meals and lodging are about $200; single day passes also are available.
Great article on a great event!
