More than 60 volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got their feet wet, so to speak, this weekend in Morristown at the first Mayor’s Lakeside Cleanup.
They collected 14 truckloads of trash from “the Poke” — as longtime residents call Lake Pocahontas–and Speedwell Lake, said Maureen Denman, chairperson of the Morristown Environmental Commission.
“When we residents feel we are part of a community, we take pride in what’s around us and how things look and contribute to the well-being of our environment,” Denman told the volunteers, who included Council President Stefan Armington surveying the scene in a kayak.
“We wouldn’t think of throwing trash out the windows in our own neighborhood when we feel that sense of ownership. If you see someone littering or dumping, please speak up, speak out and call the Morristown police or the town Administrator,” Denman said.
Organizations pitching in included the Centro Biblico church, Morristown United for Healthy Living, Sustainable Morristown, and the Friends of Foote’s Pond.
Mayor Tim Dougherty committed to beefing up police patrols around Pocahontas to curb vagrancy, Denman added.
