When John Hyland approached Mary Dougherty and asked her to run for Woman of the Year for the New Jersey chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and spend 10 weeks raising money, it took less than a second for her to agree to take on the challenge to raise $130,000.
Mary’s brother George was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma five years ago, which is treatable. Her brother’s life was saved and he just last month danced at his daughter’s wedding. Mary credits research funded by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society with saving her brother’s life.
The Man & Woman of the Year campaign started on April 4 and ends on June 15, 2017. Mary says that when she was asked to be part of the Man & Woman of the Year campaign, she felt honored and happy to be part of the solution, not only for her brother but for so many others.
She has assembled a team, Mary’s Miracle Workers, to help raise funds, and also has recruited community organizations and businesses, including Marty’s Reliable Cycle, Superhero Events, Morristown Game Vault, Glassworks Studio and Be Well Morristown.
And Mary has set up a show with Brendan Fletcher from The Voice at the Mayo Performing Arts Center.
Events for Mary’s Miracle Workers for the Woman of the Year campaign include:
April 19, Kickoff Party at Laundromat Speakeasy. Details coming soon, 4 DeHart Street.
