The late Chuck Berry’s influence on rock and roll cannot be underestimated. And he made an impact on jazz, too, according to this impromptu tribute by Grover Kemble.
Kemble delivered this swinging homage to the rock pioneer a few days after his death last month, at Festival of Music 3, a benefit for The Seeing Eye Inc. at Drew University in Madison.
Before Beethoven could roll over, Rio Clemente, the Bishop of Jazz, told Tchaikovsky the news, via this shimmery interpretation of Swan Lake:
Organized by Marty Eigen of the Beacon Hill Musicians Guild, the concert also featured singers Sarah Partridge and Stephen Fuller, guitarist Flip Peters, organist Fred Fischer, bassist Gene Perla and drummer Gordon Lane.
“The performances were entertaining and at times, quite moving,” said Seeing Eye spokeswoman Michelle Barlak. “The Seeing Eye is lucky to be a part of the carefully planned event.”
