You see them everywhere. But in the heat of the moment, how do you actually use a fire extinguisher?
Morris Township Fire Chief Jesse Kaar and his men offered some life-saving advice Monday on ABC’s Good Morning America.
See the video here.
Quick tips:
- Keep the extinguisher in an easy-to-find location, away from your stove.
- Check the expiration date; replace after 10 years
- Make sure the gauge is in the green.
- Pull the pin, aim, squeeze the trigger, sweep the bottom of the fire.
- If the fire’s not out within 30 seconds, get out.
- Call 911 in all circumstances.
Interesting. At the 2:24 mark in the video, they say they place the fire extinguisher a safe distance from any harmful flame. But in the video, the extinguisher is placed in a cabinet about two feet from the oven. Is that really a safe distance from any harmful flame?
