Video: officers Justin Crowell and Tim Neri are given lifesaving commendations
Almost a year ago, the Morris Township Police Department created an emergency services unit. The move paid dividends this month, when a pair of officers rescued a heroin overdose victim.
Thanks to Officers Justin Crowell and Tim Neri, the 19-year-old male victim “will be home this weekend with his family celebrating Christmas,” Police Chief John McGuinness said at this week’s Township committee meeting.
The officers were given life-saving commendations for their efforts.
Crowell underwent 180 hours of training to get certified as an EMT. As a result, the chief said, the officer “knew what to look for” when the duo encountered the victim face down on the floor on Dec. 12, 2016.
This was not the sort of easy call where a bag of heroin is laying next to the victim, or a needle is still in his arm, the chief said.
Crowell swiftly administered Narcan, a drug that can reverse the effects of an overdose. Neri, who joined the force just four months ago, gave the victim oxygen.
McGuinness said it was the sixth heroin overdose his officers have responded to this year.
