PUBLIC INVITED TO SCREENING, DISCUSSION ON END-OF-LIFE CAREGIVING

Atlantic Health System’s Faith Community Health Partnerships program, in conjunction with the Presbyterian Church in Morristown, is inviting the public to a screening and discussion of the PBS Frontline documentary Being Mortal at the church’s Parish House on Nov. 19, 2016.

Based on the best-selling book by Atul Gawande, MD, the documentary explores the hopes of patients and families facing terminal illness and their relationships with the physicians who treat them. The event is intended as a local forum for the national conversation between patients, caregivers and medical care providers.

“Nearly all of us at some point in our lives will be faced with making difficult medical decisions for a loved one,” said Gary E. Myers, manager of faith & health, a program of Atlantic Health System. “We hope to use this event as an opportunity to bring together medical professionals and the community to have these discussions before medical crises occur.”

In addition to the discussion, members of the public will have opportunities to connect one-on-one with local experts in the field of end-of-life care.

Atlantic Health System’s Faith Community Health Partnerships program is a framework that helps those admitted to the hospital maintain their connection to the support network of their faith community before, during, and after their hospital stays.

The FCHP utilizes liaisons from local faith communities who are trained by Atlantic Health System to provide spiritual and emotional support, help connect patients to medical resources and develop educational and healthy living programs for groups within faith communities.

Liaisons work under the direction of their faith leader and continue to receive training from Atlantic Health System, and are also supported by hospital navigators who are selected and trained by the organization.

Gawande, a surgeon, award-winning writer and public health researcher, practices general and endocrine surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and is professor in both the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard School of Public Health and the Department of Surgery at Harvard Medical School.
