The Morristown Community Soup Kitchen and Outreach Center enjoyed a perfect fall day and a record turnout for its 20th annual Hunger Walk fundraiser on Sunday.
More than 1,000 walkers registered for the event, said Julie Hess, Hunger Walk coordinator, who was confident the nonprofit would hit its goal of $100,000.
UPDATE: On Wednesdsay, the soup kitchen said it had raised more than $88,000. Donations still are being accepted here.
Each walker or group received a story card telling the personal story of a soup kitchen guest.
“It helps everyone to understand poverty on a personal level, which is especially difficult in such an affluent area. We tend to think the it doesn’t exist here but it does and we need to see it,” Hess said.
It’s a good message to take to heart as we head toward winter, an especially hard season for the hungry and the homeless.
GOOD TO SEE A COMMUNITY PULLING TOGETHER TO HELP SOLVE A SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM. WAY TO GO MORRISTOWN AND SOUP KITCHEN!
