For years, people at Morristown Medical Center have called her their guardian angel.

Now they have a new title for Trish O’Keefe:

Ms. President.

O’Keefe, who began her career as a bedside nurse 35 years ago, has been named president of the hospital, Morristown’s largest employer.

“She has dedicated her career to our patients and the community, and cares deeply about our staff, physicians and volunteers. Her collaborative spirit, positive outlook and true sense of purpose inspire all of us to do better. Trish is the perfect choice for this very important role,”  Brian Gragnolati, president and CEO of  the Atlantic Health System, said in a statement on Monday.

“As so many have said, Trish is the ‘guardian angel’ of Morristown Medical Center and its patients,” added Bill Bruen Jr., a trustee of the Foundation for Morristown Medical Center. “Morristown Medical Center could not be in more capable, caring, and compassionate hands.”

O’Keefe has been serving as the hospital’s interim president since last July, when past president David Shulkin was appointed as Under Secretary for Health for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs by President Obama.

The medical center was called Morristown Memorial Hospital when O’Keefe started there in 1981. She was named Chief Nursing Officer in 1996 and Chief Experience Officer in 2012.

Under her leadership, the hospital was recognized four times for nursing excellence — one of only 24 hospitals worldwide to gain that designation four times, according to Morristown Medical Center.

As part of a landmark tax settlement last year, the hospital agreed to expand its community health programs in Morristown. Mayor Tim Dougherty said he welcomed the chance to continue working with O’Keefe.

“With her leadership, the Town of Morristown and Morristown Medical Center have forged a strong relationship dedicated to a healthy community. She is the ideal person to become the next President of Morristown Medical Center,”  Dougherty said in a statement.

Here’s the full announcement from the hospital.
