Before Sunday’s Beethoven concert by the Discovery Orchestra, we didn’t know our Ostinato from our Stretto.

But Maestro George Marriner Maull took care of that, while decoding the fourth movement of Beethoven’s 7th Symphony at the Drew University Concert Hall.

He pointed out Ludwig’s capriciousness, and his wry humor. Who knew a bassoon could tell musical jokes?

Maull makes orchestral inside baseball–expositions and recapitulations–a lot of fun.  You can check out his symphonic show-and-tell on NJTV at 8:30 pm on Wednesday, April 20, 2016.

It’s the second installment of Maull’s eight-part series, Fall In Love With Music.   The premise: “The only way to get the most out of music is to listen carefully,” he told the Drew audience on Sunday.

This week’s episode, Why Aren’t We Listening?, is described as “an often humorous look at the distractions and cultural influences in our society that actually train us not to listen.”

The Discovery Orchestra’s next live event is a “listening class”  that will explore works by Bach, Schumann, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky, on May 7, 2016, at the New Jersey Youth Symphony Music Center in New Providence.

Reservations are $60; it’s $50 for seniors and students. See the orchestra website for details or call 908-226-7300 x 10.
