Calvin Trillin, Queen of Hearts band, fireworks to mark inauguration of Drew president

Fourteen months into the job, Drew University President MaryAnn Baenninger is ready to celebrate.

Baenninger’s installation as Drew’s 13th president is set for Friday, Oct. 2, 2015, at 11 am on the Mead Hall lawn.

Throughout the week, a  series of events on the Madison campus will mark the occasion, starting with a talk by humorist Calvin Trillin.  He addresses the Drew Forum series at 8 pm on Tuesday, Sept. 29. Tickets are $32.

A series of symposia on Thursday, Oct. 1, will examine relationships between universities and cities.

On Friday, Oct. 2, Queen of Hearts, a women quartet from Nashville, will perform bluegrass, pop, folk and blues at 8 pm in the Dorothy Young Center for the Arts. Tickets are available at the door: $20 for adultst; children and students, free.

The school’s observatory, in the Hall of Sciences, will be open at 9 pm on Friday and Saturday, weather-permitting.

Saturday, Oct. 3, is Bottle Hill Day in downtown Madison, from 10 am to 5 pm. Drew will have a tent, and student performances on the main stage.

Student performances continue on campus at 4 pm, on the Mead Hall lawn. A dance piece is scheduled for 7:30 pm in the Dorothy Young Center for the Arts, with  fireworks at 9 pm at Tilghman Field. Fireworks seating opens at 8 am; bring a lawn chair or blanket. Note: Campus parking is for permit-holders only.

Baenninger was president of the College of Saint Benedict for a decade. Before that, she was on the psychology faculty at the College of New Jersey. She holds several degrees from Temple University.

Since Baenninger’s arrival at Drew in June 2014, enrollment at the College of Liberal Arts has increased by 23 percent. New programs include First Year Experience, a New York trip for new students.
