Why should grown-ups have all the fun?
As they were preparing for Sunday’s Gran Fondo New Jersey cycling extravaganza, the next generation of cyclists was training, too, at the Mayor’s Kids Fondo on Saturday.
More than 50 young pedalers showed up for races, games and pizza.
“It was great fun,” said Marty Epstein, Fondo founder and owner of Marty’s Reliable Cycle.
Mayor Tim Dougherty gave the start order for the kids race around the driveway of the Vail Mansion. Young volunteers from the Assumption Church catechism program, led by seventh-grader Elizabeth O’Brien, served food and helped the young ones decorate their bikes.
“You would think they would be a pack of wild zombies. But give them something sticky and sparkly and they will be occupied for an hour,” said Luke Galvin, a 13-year-old volunteer.
Pizza was donated by Pomodoro Pizza. Trays of meatballs were courtesy of Millie’s Old World Meatballs and Pizza. The Iron Bar send macaroni and cheese, contributed Strawberry Fields Frozen Yogurt sent discount coupons.
