Video: Sights and sounds of World War II at Morristown Municipal Airport
Pete Toto, a Vietnam veteran from Stanhope, peered through the machine-gun window of the B-24 Liberator and marveled at the men who once flew these lumbering bombers.
“One-sixteenth inch of steel between you and death,” said Toto, who visited the Wings of Freedom Tour at Morristown Municipal Airport on Tuesday.
Four lovingly restored World War II warplanes — B-17, B-24 and B-25 bombers and a P-51C Mustang fighter–are here through Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015.
The tour is sponsored by the Collings Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to keeping this living history aloft.
For a few dollars, you can board these historic machines, and imagine what it was like to wedge inside them seven decades ago, wondering if this mission would be your last.
Starting at $400, you can actually fly in these planes. Fees are tax-deductible. Details are here.
