With one more season left for Downton Abbey, you still have time to become an expert, and really impress members of the Downton Abbey Support Group at the Morristown & Township Library.

Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison is offering a non-credit, eight-week class that meets on Sunday afternoons, starting on Sept. 27, 2015.

It will explore historical and cultural events from the early 20th century that formed the backdrop for the first five seasons of the BBC drama.  Here’s more, from the university:

Downton Abbey at FDU: A special course on the hit television program

MADISON, N.J. — Enjoying the British drama series “Downton Abbey”? If you are, Fairleigh Dickinson University has just the thing! FDU is offering a unique, non-credit, eight-week class that will examine the historical and cultural events of the first five seasons of this popular BBC period drama series. Beginning on Sunday, September 27, and continuing through November 22, 2015, the course will meet weekly on Sunday afternoons from 2 – 3:30 p.m. at FDU’s Florham Campus in Madison, N.J.

The “Experiencing Downton Abbey” class will take an in-depth look at the period in which the series is based and cover world-changing events like the sinking of the Titanic and outbreak of World War I. The class will also look at what day-to-day life was like for the upper and lower classes in Britain, including work and leisure activities, as well as the fascinating history of Highclere Castle — the real Downton Abbey.

The course will be taught by Judith Israel, an instructor in FDU’s Florham Institute for Lifelong Learning and a retired vice president for research services at Burrelle’s Information Services. Israel has also taught English at Morris County College and Chatham Junior High School. She holds an M.A. in English from New York University and an M.L.S. from Rutgers University. There will also be guest lecturers, from FDU, on various topics.
