The Axis Powers couldn’t stop these warbirds.
But Mother Nature, she’s another story.
For the second day, soggy weather has postponed the arrival of the only operational World War II B-29 Superfortress.
The B-29, nicknamed FIFI, and one of only two B-24 Liberators still flying are re-scheduled for an 11 am landing at Morristown Airport in Hanover at 11 am on Wednesday, June 3, 2015.
It’s a chance not just to glimpse history, but to meet the men who made it — former B-29 pilots Bob Boucher and Joseph Messina will accompany the aircraft, which also include a C-45 Expeditor cargo plane.
These WWII veterans are members of the Commemorative Air Force, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the aviation history of that war. Some 12,000 volunteers maintain a fleet of 160 aircraft in 23 states.
Tours of the bombers are scheduled to go until 5 pm, and cost $10 per person, $5 for children age 10-17. Children under age 10 are free. Rides on the planes can be booked on the B-29 starting at $595; a seat on the B-24 costs $395, and rides on the C-45 start at $75. Call (432) 413-4100 for more.
Morristown Airport is at 8 Airport Road in Hanover.
