Video: Prayer Flags for Nepal
By Kevin Coughlin
Prayer flags were hoisted in Morristown on Tuesday for the people of Nepal, hours after another major earthquake killed dozens of people in Nepal and India.
The colorful pennants, emblazoned with handwritten messages of hope, are meant to “raise awareness about the catastrophe in Nepal…and to represent the compassionate wishes we have for them and their healing and recovery,” said Sensai Ray Cicetti of Empty Bowl Zendo, a Zen Buddhist congregation of about 200 people who meet at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer.
The event had been planned before Tuesday’s 7.3-magnitude earthquake, which followed the April 25 quake that killed an estimated 8,000 people.
“When the wind blows, our prayers are carried on the wind,” Cicetti said, as the flags fluttered in gusty winds over the front lawn of the church on South Street.

Redeemer Pastor Cynthia Black said she has a personal connection to these tragedies. Two friends were trapped on Mount Everest for three days after last month’s quake.
“What I hope will happen is these flags will be a reminder, not only to us, but to Morristown, that once Nepal is out of the news cycle, the people of Nepal are not,” Black said.
So far, the church has raised nearly $2,000 for Nepal relief efforts, she said.
How sensitive. We had an unusually windy day yesterday.
This looks like a good place to donate.
I trust the faith connections.
