You may have caught a sighting of Homer Hansen, that 96-year-old Renaissance man, at a school, library, museum, or diner.
Homer creates whimsical little paper cuttings of trees, birds that really fly, dancers that he calls Homergami.
Some of his Homergami are on permanent display in the children’s section of the Morris County Library. If you met him you probably have kept one of these playful creations
Even more than the miniature artwork, however, you remember Homer’s warm and friendly personality that brings little glimmers of sunshine to the moment.
There is another side of Homer that will be honored on May 9, 2015, in a special 7 pm concert, The Wisdom of Homer,
In addition to his photography, his inventions, and his harmonica, Homer is also a poet.
He has written hundreds of poems over his lifetime that are imaginative and moving.
His themes are as varied as his interests: Nature, the wonders of life, animals and of course– love and friendship.
Saturday will be the premiere of Homer’s Wisdom, a concert in which a number of his poems will be set to music by local composers.
The composers are George Aronson, Darrel Courtley, Jerry LaBrie, David LeClair, and Sarah Matsushima.
I don’t dwell on the endingI dwell on the joyand the greatfulnessfor being thereBecause I knowthere will be more.— Homer Hansen
This unique evening of music was set into motion by Dr. Jim Blanton, music director of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship.
At the concert, artwork by Homer and a photo celebration of his life will be displayed.
A reception to honor Homer will follow the program.
