The Morristown High School girls lacrosse team will “Pedal for a Cure” on Sunday, March 22, 2015, to raise money for research to cure a rare form of the disease affecting the Giardina family, owners of the South Street Creamery.

Pedal for a Cure , a local nonprofit, has scheduled this event for the NBD Training Zone, at 40 Park Place in Morristown, from 8 am to noon.

Participants will pay $35 to ride a stationary bike for an hour. The fees will be donated to a research program for ocular cancer, at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia.

Jeff Giardina, the husband of Creamery owner Lori Ann Giardina, is battling this virulent cancer of the eye, which has no cure.  The community rallied around the family at an ice cream fundraiser in December.

The Giardinas, parents of two boys, plan to spin at 9 am on March 22.
Pedaling at 11 am for the lacrosse team are: Captain Maddy Heher, Caroline Hersh, Lauren Goldhirsch, Casey O’Brien, Kara O’Brien, Amelia Drake, Jenna Gill, Sarah Grace Plott, Victoria Ferrara and Jazzy Cachimbo.

Heher will be playing lacrosse at Denison University this fall. Casey O’Brien will play at Florida Southern, and Cachimbo will play for Kean University. Goldhirsch is bound for the University of Michigan.

Kara O’Brien (freshman) and Drake (sophomore) are goalies. Plott and Ferrara are sophomores and Gill is a junior.

They plan to start their Pedal fundraising at the St. Patrick’s Parade on March 14. Helping charitable causes is nothing new for these girls, however.  For three years they have raised money to combat autism.

Next month, they will host Laxfest, for younger players. The team gave weekly lacrosse clinics at the Morristown Neighborhood House last June.

Anyone who wants to follow the girls’ example by Pedaling for a Cure should call Cheryl Beneduce Bock at 908-625-6637.
