Third-seeded Ridge handed sixth-seeded Morristown High a 5-3 defeat in Monday’s state hockey quarterfinals, ending the Colonials’ hopes for a Cinderella repeat of last year’s state championship.

For the first time in four years, Morristown won’t be skating in the finals.

The Colonials, who dispatched Montgomery and Monroe to advance to yesterday’s showdown at the Bridgewater Sports Arena, fought back from a two-goal deficit against Ridge with goals by Bradley Greik and Jakob DeFares.

The score was 2-2 to start the third period. But a pair of goals by Gavin Kirkwood sealed Morristown’s fate.

Still, making the third round of the playoffs is a pretty fair achievement for Coach Bobby Jones’ club, when you consider that Morristown lost 11 seniors from last year’s championship team to graduation — along with All-State goalie Shane Brown, who left this season to play in a juniors league.
