Morristown Mayor Tim Dougherty made a special delivery to the Assumption School this week, dropping off a proclamation saluting the school’s academic achievements.
The U.S. Department of Education recognized the Catholic school with a National Blue Ribbon School Award last fall.
Assumption was cited as an “exemplary high performing” school. The Mendham Township Middle School and the Milton Avenue School in Chatham were the other Morris County schools to make that list.
In all, 290 public- and 50 private schools were awarded Blue Ribbons last November. Assumption joins a list of 7,900 winners over the last 32 years.
“National Blue Ribbon Schools represent a standard of educational excellence and having this new title only further demonstrates their work towards the goal of preparing our youth for academic achievement,” the Mayor said in a statement.
Established in 1850, the K-8 school in Morristown numbers Gov. Chris Christie’s children among its alumni.
The school received the Mayor’s proclamation during a Service Project Day, when students were scheduled to fill backpacks with supplies for a needy Catholic school in Hudson County.
“We want our students to be prepared academically, but much of that is also intertwined with who they believe themselves to be. Our students are confident, grounded and happy and that is truly worth it all,” said Sister Merris Larkin, Assumption principal, in a statement.
