First Night Morris Chairman Michael Schmidt has been hinting for weeks that he’ll be stepping down to pursue “other interests.”
Like … planning a wedding?
Moments before midnight fireworks splashed above the frosty Morristown Green at First Night Morris 2015, Mike thanked First Night volunteers, sponsors and performers…and popped the question to girlfriend Kacie Welsh, as members of both families cheered.
Tears. A ring. Fireworks. Not too shabby!
Mike (’02) and Kacie (’01) were friends at Morristown High School, but they only became an item after college, three years ago.
The future groom tipped off friends and family members about the proposal … and then put his emotions on autopilot, as 80 performances rolled out at 24 First Night venues across Morristown.
“I don’t usually get nervous. There’s too much going on to think about it,” Mike said earlier in the day.

Since assuming the First Night Morris chairmanship four years ago, Mike has helped update the nonprofit’s social media outreach and corporate fundraising, and stabilized its financial operations.
Mike studied business and accounting at the University of Richmond and has an MBA from Rutgers. His day job is in finance with Quest Diagnostics.
Kacie studied social work at James Madison University and has a master’s degree from Rutgers. She is a social worker at Overlook Hospital.
If Kacie needs help with wedding details, she has the right guy. Mike digests mountains of data as a member of Morristown’s zoning board.
