Morristown’s winning soccer strategy: ‘Play with your head, enjoy with your heart’

In this interview with Colonial Corner Sports, Morristown High School soccer coach Brian Kiernan lays out his strategy for the Tournament of Champions:

“None of the history matters. Play with your head. Enjoy with your heart,” Kiernan said.

On Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2014,  the Colonials will battle Scotch Plains at Somerville High School in the semifinals.

Morristown earned the berth by beating Passaic Tech, 2-1, in double overtime on Thursday. Chris Quiceno kicked the game winner, which made the Colonials champs of Section 1, Group 4 — their first sectional title in boys varsity soccer.

Coach Kiernan told Colonial Corner Sports that he made a substitution in the second overtime because he wanted a “more aggressive game.”  He was not eager to see the match decided by penalty kicks.

“This is a great group we have, very cohesive, very supportive of each other,” he said.

Scotch Plains is very talented, the coach added. “Bottom line, we have to prepare for a physical game — but also, for a technical and tactical one.”

Tuesday’s game time is 7:30 pm.

  1. The game has been moved to Wednesday at 7:30pm at Somerville High School due to the cold temperatures and high winds we are expecting in the area Tuesday night.
