Sure, Greater Morristown offers plenty of opportunities for young trick-or-treaters.

THURSDAY, OCT. 30, 2014:

Sustainable Morristown  is holding a Meet and Greet from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm at 14 Maple Ave., on the third floor. Tour the LEED-certified building, enjoy light refreshments and cocktails, and learn about volunteer opportunities to help sustain the community.


FRIDAY, OCT. 31, HALLOWEEN:

At noon the Presbyterian Church in Morristown is promising Halloween fun at its free lunchtime concert. Violinist Lisa Romain and pianist Suzana Bartal will perform Beethoven’s Sonata in F Major (“Spring”), with commentary from Romain. At 57 East Park Place.

From 3 pm to 5 pm on Halloween, downtown businesses will have candy for young trick-or-treaters. The annual event is organized by the Morristown Partnership. Here is the list of participating businesses.

 

Shops along Speedwell Avenue in Morris Township also will welcome candy-seeking kids, from 3 pm to 5 pm.

halloween parade morris plainsA Halloween parade starts at 4 pm at Roberts Garden in Morris Plains and proceeds to Simons Park. Refreshments will be served!  The parade is sponsored by the Morris Plains Fire Association and the borough Recreation Commission. Rain or shine.

The monthly Critical Mass bike loop around Morristown rolls from the town hall parking lot at 6:30 pm on Friday. Costumes always are welcome on this leisurely jaunt!   The parking lot is accessed from Franklin Street.

A pair of nonprofits, NewBridge Services Inc. and the Northwest New Jersey Community Action Partnership, are hosting a  Haunting Spirits Preview Party at the Morristown Armory Antiques Show from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Guests are invited to get the first look at unique items from more than 100 antique dealers. Wine, beer, food, and live music will be among the highlights of the event, along with a raffle and a free item appraisal. The Minstrel in Morris Township features the one and only Grover Kemble as the one and only Jimmy Durante — and adds a Cavalcade of Costumed Crooners as a bonus.  Patrons are encouraged to come in costume; prizes will be awarded!  Admission is $9 for adults; children 12 and under are free. At 8 pm at the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road.

The New Jersey Young Professionals are throwing a costumed Halloween party at Sona Thirteen, at 8 pm on Friday. Tickets range from $10 to $20, depending on when you register and whether you are a member. See the link above for more details.

 

 


SATURDAY, NOV. 1:

A kid-friendly rock-and-roll concert? You bet. StarFish Band for Kids will rock The Red Oaks School at 1 pm at the Morris Museum’s Bickford Theater at 6 Normandy Heights Road in Morris Township. StarFish Band for Kids is led by four local dads and former rock stars who met through their children and then set out “to help kids develop an early appreciation for real rock music, while entertaining parents, too!” Tickets can be reserved in advance for $12, at www.redoaksschool.org. The Morristown High School football team (3-4) takes on its arch-rival, the unbeaten Delbarton School, at home at 1 pm.

On Saturday, the Drew University da Camera Concert series continues with a concert by Parthenia with British counter-tenor Ryland Angel. Flaming Fire features music from Tudor-era Scotland and England with instrument and voice. Parthenia’s performances have included Elizabethan poetry and Christmas music, works from Renaissance France as well as commissioned, original works. The ensemble plays a collection of 16th- and 17th century stringed instruments called viols. Pre-concert conversations with the artists begin at 7:15 pm, and the concert follows at 8 pm. SUNDAY, NOV. 2:

The Morristown Farmers Market still has a few more weeks in its 24th season, courtesy of the Morristown Partnership and its sponsors. From 8:30 am to 2 pm, you can find produce from North Jersey farms, baked goods, and more, in municipal parking lot 10, behind the post office. Lots of entertainment and wellness events will be sprinkled throughout the year. The Farmers Market is open on Sundays through the end of November.

Ebola is on everyone’s mind these days. What is fact, and what is fiction?  Bring your questions to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Morristown, where Dr. Kathleen Ruddy will speak at 10 am. Dr. Ruddy, a member of St. Peter’s, is a breast surgeon who serves on the Leadership Council of the Harvard School of Public Health. She also is the founder of the Breast Health and Healing Foundation.  Her talk is in the Parish Hall, accessed from Miller Road. All are invited.

The Chancel Choir of The Presbyterian Church in Morristown with organist Ryan Kennedy and violinist Amy Hamilton-Soto, directed by Matthew Webb, present Requiem by Gabriel Fauré at 10 am. The 40-voice choir will be accompanied by organ and violin within the context of an All Saint’s Day service. The Presbyterian Church is at 57 East Park Place in Morristown.

A new Thomas Nast exhibition debuts at the Macculloch Hall Historical Museum during museum hours, 1 pm to 4 pm. Thomas Nast: Unknown Works and American Icons features previously unpublished oil paintings, water colors, and rarely seen pencil sketches and pen and ink drawings. Some of Nast’s best-known characters will be on display, including Santa Claus, the Democratic Donkey, and Uncle Sam. If you can’t make the opening, come back on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays from 1 pm to 4 pm; the last tour leaves at 3 pm. Admission is $8 for adults; $6 for seniors and students; $4 for children 6-12; and free for members and children 5 and younger. The museumis at 45 Macculloch Ave. in Morristown.

Mystic and scholar Dale Allen Hoffman will speak at 1:30 pm at the Center for Spiritual Living Morristown. His two-hour lecture, entitled ENANA: Living from the I Am,  uses Aramaic translations to reinterpret the teachings of Jesus. Hoffman returns on Monday, Nov. 3, 2014, from 7 pm to 9 pm to present Aramaic Toning, Prayer & Cosmic Chant Circle with Crystal Singing Bowl. Admission to each session is $25, at the door or by calling 973-539-3114. The center is at 331 Mount Kemble Ave. in Harding.

A Musical Salute to Molly Picon, Star of Yiddish Theatrefeatures professor, actress and performer Dr. Diane Cypkin at 2 pm at the Morristown & Township Library. In this salute to theatre, Dr. Cypkin will narrate the life story of Yiddish actress Molly Picon, a native New Yorker who starred for more than seven decades in film, radio, television and the stage. Picon was most known for her work in Ost und West, Mamele, and The Facts of Life episode From Russia with Love.  Admission is free. Refreshments will be served. At One Miller Road, Morristown. At 3 pm, the New Jersey Festival Orchestra presents its Halloween Spooktacular at Morris Township’s Bickford Theatre, where it will perform a live soundtrack to Greta Garbo’s silent classic, Flesh and the Devil.  The afternoon also will include a performance of Beethoven’s seventh symphony. Tickets are $30 for Morris Museum members, $35 for non-members and $50 for premiere seating. The theatre is at the museum, at 6 Normandy Heights Road. Call 973-971-3706 for more information.
