Morristown’s high-powered offense was shut down Thursday night in Roxbury by an undefeated Gaels squad, which also managed to exploit some injuries in the Colonials’ secondary.

The first quarter was mostly the Colonials: Treyshawn Gwynn punishing defenders, as fans have become accustomed to seeing him do,  and making a big 3rd down that later set up an Ethan Bolson field goal. So the Colonials scored first, but they didn’t score again until the 4th quarter.

On the next series, Roxbury would go three-and-out for the last time until that 4th quarter.

Unfortunately for the Colonials, Roxbury had the ground game covered, too. MHS managed only 74 yards rushing. There were a couple of bright spots. Ricky Lorenzo caught 3 passes for 53 yards and also had one run for 18, looking more like a power fullback that a stealth bomber.

Cody Heaton had four catches for 38 yards, two of which he fought for the extra yardage needed for key third down conversions. Dallas McCall-to-Jordan Powell resulted in two TD passes, to make the score 31-17. The Colonials host Mendham at home on the turf on Oct. 11, 2014, at 2:30 pm.

Colonials Frosh lose in a scrap against Roxbury at home.

This game was all about long, clock-eating drives. In the first series, Machel Campbell, Drew Chilson, Jake Buchner and Gary Smith smothered the backfield in a tacking swarm. On a key 3rd down, Michael Heaton read a pass, and tip-drilled the ball into the hands of Nathan Estivaerne. It was Nathan’s first interception as a Colonial.

Lead by Jake Buchner, the Frosh marched down field. A Buchner-to-Justin Pierro pass gained 18 yards, then Jhamil King ran over the Rox for 30 yards. From there, Drew Chilson hammered his way to a TD from the 20. It was 6 – 0, Morristown.

In the next defensive series, it was Heaton again, with a nice open field tackle to save a TD. Daniel Lopez, Thomas Hussey and Blake Pierro made the Rox runners pay for every inch. Drew Chilson demonstrated a pile-driver tackle, Matthew McNally kept the Gaels honest, but the Rox finally scored, PAT was good. It was 6-7, Roxbury.

In the next offensive series, Jhamil King burned the Rox secondary on a perfect Buchner toss, to make it 14-7, Morristown.

As so it went, each team trading licks and TDs. Buchner threw another perfect pass to King for 35 yards, Chilson blasted over defenders for another score. King ducked between tackles on 3rd and short and decided to grab 40 yards instead. Buckner scored on a keeper.

Gary Smith introduced himself to the Rox runners several more times. Buchner tossed another pass to Chilson for 30 yards. Score late in the 4th: 20-20.

Roxbury drove and chewed up the time. Finally, the Gaels score dwith seconds left, to go up, 27-20. The Colonials had time for one play, from their own 30, to tie. The game ended on a broken play. But it was a great team effort for the Frosh.
