From the onset on Saturday, Morristown’s Jordan Powell demonstrates the hypnotic running style that makes one wonder if he is moving at all.

The first series ends in a 1-2-3 punt for both sides. Then, from the Colonials’ 20 yard line, Powell takes three plays to reach go, 80 yards to the red zone. Treyshawn Gwynn punishes the Mount Olive defenders from the 20, Dallas McCall gains a few, then Gwynn punches a hole to the end zone. After the point-after Ethan Bolson, it’s 7-0. The Colonials never look back.

The next TD is set up on an Anton Buchner fumble recovery at the Mount Olive 40. McCall scrambles for 10, Powell, glides for another 10, then McCall scores on a keeper. It’s 14-0, Colonials.

On the next series, defensive stalwarts Andrew Benvenuto and Ryan Wilson make Mount Olive pay for small gains until Sarri Cazimoski sacks the QB for a loss of 10 that ends a drive that started on the 20.

Motown takes over on its own 9.  Jesse Unger blasts for several yards, then McCall scrambles for another big gain. Gwynn has been punishing the defense the whole series, and nobody seriously tries to stop him on his next run to the end zone. It’s 21 – 0 Colonials, after Bolson’s PAT.

On the next series, the Colonials defense swarms over Mount Olive courtesy of Benvenuto, Unger and Buchner. Deep in Colonial territory, Mount Olive fakes a punt for the first down. If I was the offense, I’d be looking for a break!

Then the Colonials get a break as Justin Burke gets his second OSKIE of the season. The Colonials are deep in Olive territory, so it’s time to call on the Ricky Lorenzo Stealth Bomber. It’s a post patterns that the Bomber delivers for a 77 yard TD. It’s 28-0.

Bolson keeps Mount Olive bottled up with touchbacks, but on this drive the Marauders will score to make it 28-7.

Next series has some thrilling runs by McCall, one for 40 yards, and Unger keeps pounding away down the middle. However, the Colonials lose position on a 4th-and-5 deep in Olive territory. Mount Olive doesn’t give up though, and a few plays later Lorenzo proves he is a fighter as well as he saves a TD on a shoestring tackle.

It’s 4th-and-goal on the 3, but the rigid Colonials defense stops Mount Olive cold. It’s still 28-7 at the half.

Due to the heat, the second half slows down a bit. Powell demonstrates the proper way to do a tip drill OSKIE. McCall racks up more yards with deft scrambling. Khair Pettiway scores on a fake to Gwynn.  It’s 35-7 Colonials.

Gynn takes defensive revenge on a Mack Truck hit, Benvenuto and Wilson keep the opponents honest, Robinson makes a big sack on a key 3rd down, but somehow the Marauders score. Powell makes some key first downs, Gwynn drags one defender over another would-be tackler, and scores another TD.

On defense, Devontae Jonah adds to the Colonials’ sack total, and Shakeem Benbow does another crushing hit on a Mount Olive ball carrier. Ouch. Benbow and Burke knock down would-be TDs.

The last Colonials offensive series is the most fun to watch for “pound the ground” fans. Unger and Gwynn run the ball between the tackles, three, four and five 5 consecutive times before Unger blasts into the end zone for his first varsity TD. Final score: 48 – 20, Morristown.

Next, the Colonials (2-1) travel to Roxbury on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014, for a 7 pm kickoff.
