It wasn’t just any man. It was the man.

Santa.

Morristown Firefighters Sean McDonough and Mike Cirelli brought him down from the Century 21 rooftop with an assist from fellow Fireman Don Leyhan on Sunday night, to squeals of rapturous delight from the youthful multitudes assembled below.

Personally, we did not see the reindeer land on the roof.  But Santa told us his flight from the North Pole was “super-duper.”

Everyone joined Mr. Kringle in a rapid countdown, and suddenly the historic Morristown Green was bathed in the colorful glow of some 150,000 holiday lights.

With a police escort, the jolly visitor safely made his way through a sea of squirts to the Santa House, where he will entertain requests for the next three weekends, courtesy of the Morristown Partnership.

This year marks the centennial of the first tree-lighting on the Green. The Morris Choral Society caroled heartily, as we presume choristers did a century ago.

We’re pretty sure that Frosty the Snowman and Santa Claus is Coming to Town were not on that first set list, however.

You’ll get a few more chances to catch the Morris Choral Society over the holidays.

On Dec. 7, 2013, at 7 pm, the choir performs at the Community Creche Celebration, at the Church of the Latter day Saints on James Street in Morristown. And on Dec. 13 and Dec. 15, the singers will give holiday concerts at the Bickford Theatre in Morris Township.

Meanwhile, ice sculpting, gingerbread-making, choo-choo rides and tuba carols are scheduled for the Christmas Festival at the Morristown Green. A schedule is here, and we will have updates in our Weekend Preview every Thursday.

On Monday, Dec. 2, the festivities resume with the annual menorah lighting on the Green, at 6:30 pm.
