A utility crew has been investigating a report of smoke from a manhole near the Morristown train station this afternoon, July 31, 2013.

The manhole is on a Morris Street sidewalk, near the train trestle at the intersection of Elm Street.  A spokesman for Jersey Central Power& Light said police reported seeing smoke. No further details were immediately available.

Underground malfunctions caused problems for years in Morristown, culminating in an injury to a Morris Township mom when flames dislodged a manhole cover in 2011.

State regulatory officials held hearings, and JCP&L performed extensive renovations and installed some tethered manhole covers for safety.

Things have been relatively calm since, with the exception of smoky conditions at a manhole on North Park Place in May.
