The  Verizon Wireless Classic Challenge Road Race is scheduled to sprint into Morristown on July 18, 2013. But it could be more like a slow walk if the heat wave persists.

Registration for racers is closed, and Verizon is asking participants to check the race website Thursday for weather-related advisories.

Because of the heat wave, organizers may decide to scale back the race in the interests of safety:

“Should the weather conditions warrant it, the event may become a non-timed and non-scored event featuring a Fun Run/Walk on an abbreviated course,” according to the site.

Police, meanwhile, advise motorists to expect some road closures starting around 5:30 pm. (See list below.)
