Wiring suspected in Grant Street fire in Morristown

A wiring malfunction is suspected of causing a blaze that rendered a Grant Street apartment house uninhabitable on Saturday night, Morristown Fire Chief Robert Flanagan said.

It took firefighters just over an hour to extinguish the fire, which engulfed the front of the first-floor apartment at 8 Grant St. The second and third floor units sustained heavy smoke damage, the Chief said.

Nobody was at home when the fire department arrived at 9:08 pm, and none of the firefighters were injured, he said.

The cause of the fire does not appear to be suspicious, he added.

Capt. Stewart Williamson responded to the scene. Morristown firefighters were backed up by Madison Fire Department’s Rapid Intervention Crew. The Morristown Ambulance Squad, the Morris County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division and an emergency crew from Jersey Central Power & Light also responded.
