Remembering nameless heroes on Memorial Day in Morristown

We gather on Memorial Day to remember those who died for our country, those who are buried around the world, in Arlington National Cemetery and in local cemeteries across the nation including here in Morristown.

Some of the individuals who have died in wars have never been identified, though, because, among other reasons, their service pre-dated dog tags and official next-of-kin notifications.

Behind the Presbyterian Church on the Green, there is a small section of graves that contain the remains of unknown individuals from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.

Even without their names, those memorial headstones give meaning to the lives of those buried there; the stones give dignity to their lives and acknowledge their courage and sacrifice. We mourn them today.
