THURSDAY, MAY 16, 2013: We take it for granted. We treat it like…dirt. But there’s more to soil then meets the eye. Find out how much more at a screening of Dirt, the last movie in Grow It Green Morristown’s film series. Showtime is at 7 pm at the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, 14 Maple Ave., in Morristown. FRIDAY, MAY 17:

The Morris County Park Commission is hosting its second annual Food Revolution Weekend, in conjunction with The Jamie Oliver Foundation. Kids 6 and older can create self-portraits using images of food, at Historic Speedwell.  From 6 pm to 8 pm, Dr. Bump will discuss genetically modified organisms, food labels and how to beat childhood obesity. It’s a healthy dish pot luck event. Admission is free. The purpose of this special weekend is to help people make healthier food choices. See Saturday’s Fosterfields entry for more activities.

It’s Open Stage Night at The Minstrel. Show your stuff, polish your act, build your nerve. Admission: $8, children under 12, free. At the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship,  21 Normandy Heights Road, Morris Township.

Still going strong after four decades, the Grammy-winning Manhattan Transfer stops at the Mayo Performing Arts Center at 8 pm. Tickets are $39 to $69. Call 973-539-8008.

 Bring a Guest bannerTwo tickets for the price of one: What better way to take in the sites?  Nine tourism venues–eight around Greater Morristown!– are offering this deal today and tomorrow, in a Bring a Guest promotion sponsored by the Morris County Alliance for Tourism.  The sites: Fosterfields Living Historical Farm, Historic Speedwell, the Morristown National Historical Park,  the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts, Macculloch Hall Historical Museum, Morris County Historical Society at Acorn Hall, Morris Museum, the Schuyler-Hamilton House and the Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms. Grow It Green Morristown is holding a seedling sale, from 10 am to 4 pm, at the Early Street Community Garden.

The Morris County Park Commission continues its Food Revolution Weekend at the Fosterfields Living Historical Farm in Morris Township, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with food demonstrations such as juicing, making smoothies and more, as well as fitness activities, games, and exhibits on diet and health. Admission: Free. On Kahdena Road, Morris Township.

The Masonic Lodge in Morristown is hosting an all-you-can-eat-pasta-dinner from 4:30 pm to 7 pm. Pasta, meatballs, sausage, salad, bread, beverages, dessert–all for a $10 donation (ages 10 and up), or $4 (under age 10). At 39 Maple Ave. For more info call 973-715-9271 or email here.

“Pure, irresistible joy” is how NPR describes the David Wax Museum This popular quartet performs at the Sanctuary’s  annual “ice cream social” in Chatham at 8 pm. For $10, you get a concert, ice cream and a chance to buy stacks of CDs for $1 apiece. The Sanctuary is in the Presbyterian Church at 240 Southern Boulevard. Call 973-376-4946 for more information.

The David Wax Museum:

SUNDAY, MAY 19:

Festival Earth returns to the Morristown Green from noon to 6 pm, hosted by Sustainable Morristown. Stop by our MorristownGreen.com booth and say hello!  Musical acts include the wildly whimsical Lords of Liechtenstein. Morris Arts will host an arts showcase. There also will be a sustainable living expo, a hybrid electric car show, a farmer’s market, a healthy foods pavilion and arts and crafts for kids.

Here’s a double treat for kids ages 4-12: The New Jersey Ballet presents Beauty and the Beast and Peter in the Wolf, at the Mayo Performing Arts Center. Shows at 1:30 pm and 4 pm.  Tickets: $12 to $15. Call 973-539-8008.

How about a Scottish Highland concert followed by a fish ‘n chips supper?  It starts at 4 pm at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Morristown and features the church choir and the Rampant Lion Pipe Band, with Scottish dancers and other special guests, to benefit the band and the church music program. The concert is $10, and the 5 pm supper is $15 in advance or $25 at the door. The Argyle of Kearny will cater the fish ‘n chips; chicken and meat pies also will be offered.

Morristown’s Sunday Night Portrait Drawing Sessions continue at ArtSpace at 14 Elm St. Sessions run from 6 pm to 9 pm and feature live models and camaraderie for $10.
