Time travelers, take note: It’s a Revolutionary Replay at Jockey Hollow, April 20-21

Every now and then it’s good to be reminded how good we have it.

This weekend, April 20-21, 2013, is one of those times.

Re-enactors will pitch their tents and polish their bayonets at Jockey Hollow, re-creating the thaw after the Hard Winter of 1779-80.

History truly comes alive at this annual encampment.  It’s family friendly, and its free. Immerse yourself for a few hours…and then be thankful you are going home to a supper that you didn’t have to personally shoot,  and a warm, dry bed that’s not made of straw.

Jockey Hollow Re-Enactment Weekend

The Continental Army encampment comes to life!

Join us the weekend of April 20th and 21st as soldiers, their wives and their children return to Jockey Hollow for our Encampment Weekend. It’s an event full of activities for the whole family.

Events throughout the weekend will let you discover the life of a soldier the Spring of 1780 in Jockey Hollow. Throughout the encampment site you will be able to experience many parts of camp life. See cooking demonstrations, or participate in our Kid’s Drill, where the whole family can learn to be colonial soldiers.

At least 13 re-enactor regiments will demonstrate various Revolutionary War military tactics and maneuvers throughout the weekend, including musket and artillery firing.

Encampment Schedule

  • 9 am: Camp Opens: The Continental Army resumes their encampment of Jockey Hollow. Come and meet the soldiers and camp followers as they drill, prepare food and talk about how they survived the “Hard Winter.”
  • 10:30 am to Noon: Ongoing Activities: Experience games played by children during the Revolution at the Wick House and 18th Century traveling Blacksmith in the Soldiers Camp.
  • 10:30 am: Military Drill and Demonstration: Hear the crack of the musket as soldiers demonstrate infantry maneuvers of the Revolutionary War.
  • 11 am: Children’s Drill: Kids can become new recruits and try their hands at the musket drill under the watchful eye of the drill sergeant at the Wick House.
  • 1 pm to 5 pm: Ongoing Activities: Experience games played by children during the Revolution at the Wick House and 18th Century traveling Blacksmith in the Soldiers Camp.
  • 1:30 pm: Military Drill Demonstration: Hear the crack of the musket as soldiers demonstrate infantry maneuvers of the Revolutionary War.
  • 2 pm: Children’s Drill: Kids can become new recruits and try their hands at the musket drill under the watchful eye of the drill sergeant at the Wick House.
  • 3 pm: Military Drill Demonstration: Hear the crack of the musket as soldiers demonstrate infantry maneuvers of the Revolutionary War.
  • 3:45 pm: Children’s Drill: Kids can become new recruits and try their hands at the musket drill under the watchful eye of the drill sergeant at the Wick House.
  • 5 pm: Camp Closes: Thank you for joining us in celebration of Encampment Weekend 2013
