THURSDAY, APRIL 11, 2013:

morris arts logoMorris Arts (formerly the Arts Council of the Morris Area) celebrates its 40th anniversary with Celebrate the Arts from 5:30-7:30 pm, at the Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation auditorium in East Hanover, off Ridgedale Avenue. Online registration required, to obtain a parking pass.

What do doctors who specialize in the care of hospitalized patients do, and what are they called? Learn about How the Hospitalist System Works with Dr. Stanley Fiel of the Morristown Medical Center. Spring cleaning? Garage cleaning! Need professional organizing help? Attend Take Back the Garage – Organize Your Garage in a Weekend at the Morristown & Township Library at 7 pm. Certified Professional Organizer Amara Willey  will help you develop a workable plan to attack the boxes, odds and ends and turn your garage into a functional storage space. Program is free and refreshments will be served. At One Miller Road, Morristown.

The North Jersey Revolutionary Roundtable gathers at 7:14 pm at Washington’s Headquarters Museum Auditorium, 30 Washington Place, Morristown, for a free program titled Benedict Arnold in the Company of Heroes. Learn about hundreds of patriots who followed Arnold to Canada at the beginning of the American Revolution, capturing Quebec in December of 1775. Award-winning American Revolution writer Arthur Lefkowitz, a Roundtable member, will lead and answer questions about Arnold and the lives of some of the first American patriots. Books will be available for purchase.

Legally Blonde — The Musical lights up the stage at the County College of Morris in Randolph at 7:30 pm. At the Dragonetti Auditorium, in the Student Community Center. Also on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm, with a 2 pm matinee on Saturday. Admission: $15. CCM students, alumni, seniors and children, $12.


FRIDAY, APRIL 12:

The Center for Spiritual Living Morristown presents April Spiritual Cinema. People vs. the State of Illusion, directed by Scott Cervine and written/produced by Austin Vickers, is set in the New Mexico State Penitentiary. The film shows how one can change life’s events in the darkest of circumstances- – even from behind bars. Copies of the DVD will be available for purchase after the film. Free; donations accepted. At 331 Mount Kemble Ave., Harding. Shorts begin at 7 pm; feature begins at 7:30 pm.

Open Stage at The Minstrel starts at 8 pm. Hear new performers honing their craft. Adults $8; children 12 and under are free. At 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morris Township.


SATURDAY, APRIL 13:

Here is an artists workshop with something for everyone: Animation, mixed media, music dance, video, poetry, theater and writing. It’s called Artists Realizing Opportunities Through Collaboration, and it features breakout sessions with people like Bonnie Monte, artistic director of the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, and members of the popular Brooklyn band Hem. The event runs from 9 am to 12:45 pm at the  Dorothy Young Center for the Arts at Drew University, 36 Madison Ave., Madison. Admission is $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Morris Arts and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts are the hosts, in partnership with Drew.

Riding a bike is as easy as…riding a bike!  Let the experts show you how. Bike and Walk Morristown and TransOptions are offering a free two-hour class for adults that will have you cruisin’ the streets in no time. The lesson starts at 10 am, in the parking lot of the Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey, at 175 South Street (corner of James Street). Learn to balance, pedal, start, stop and steer.  You’ll also be taught how to adjust your helmet for a proper fit. Bring your own or a borrowed bicycle. Take care of the environment and learn a new skill at the Build Your Own Rain Barrel Workshop from 1 pm to 4 pm at Burnham Park in Morristown. The event is sponsored by the Whippany River Watershed Action Committee (WRAC) and the Burnham Park Association, and attendees will build, paint and decorate their own 55-gallon rain barrels using tools and supplies from the Rutgers Water Resource Program.  “By collecting rainwater, homeowners help to reduce flooding and pollution in the Whippany River as well as recharge our precious aquifers,” states watershed committee Facilitator Art Vespignani. Artist Willie Baez and interns from Arts by the People will lend a hand. Cost: $65 per barrel, includes supplies and tools. SUNDAY, APRIL 14:

The Rev. Janet Broderick of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Morristown continues her Modern Prophets lecture series at 10 am with a discussion of Wassily Kandinsky. In coming weeks she will tackle Soren Kierkegaard, Franz Kafka and Malcolm X.  The public is welcome; the church is at 70 Maple Ave.

Temple B’Nai Or is hosting a noon book swap and bake sale. Bring your family, a pile of books and $10. Leave with an equal number of new-to-you books and some bagels or other baked goods and spend the rest of the day reading and snacking. Books for all ages welcome — no encyclopedias, textbooks or journals, please. Admission covers the whole family. At 60 Overlook Road in Morristown. Call 973-539-4539 for more information.

After the book swap, meet a dozen artists from the Morris County Art Association, commemorating the Association’s 75th anniversary at Temple B’nai Or, from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm, at the Linda Grandis Blatt Gallery. The gallery is open weekdays and Sunday mornings.  Visitors should call the Temple office (973-539-4539) to confirm that the gallery will be open.

cupid, valentinesJust because it’s April doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate love. That’s right, The Minstrel  has rescheduled its snowed-out Valentine’s Day Show for 5 pm. Twenty-four acts, refreshments, and a special admission price of $9. At the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road in Morris Township. And if Valentine’s Day in April works, perhaps the Folk Project can move April Fool’s Day to February 14.

Morristown’s Sunday Night Portrait Drawing Sessions have returned to ArtSpace at 14 Elm St. Sessions run from 6 pm to 9 pm and feature live models and camaraderie for $10.
