After the massacre of 26 schoolchildren and staff members last December, people in Newtown, CT., started a campaign called the Sandy Hook Promise.

It asks people to honor the memories of those slain at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. And the pledge challenges signers to press for common-sense measures to make America safer from similar acts of violence.

The co-founder of the Sandy Hook Promise, Rob Cox of Newtown, will speak at a breakfast in Morristown on Saturday, March 9, before the Morris County St. Patrick’s Parade.

Hosted by the Morris Area Committee to Reduce Gun Violence, the hour-long breakfast starts at 9:30 am in the Presbyterian Parish House at 65 South St. Admission is free.

WHO:
Founded in mid-January 2013, the Morris Area Committee to Reduce Gun Violence is a non-partisan, grassroots group focused on reducing the high rate of gun violence in America.   Just four weeks after our first meeting, 300 attended our two-month Newtown memorial Vigil and Rally for all children lost to gun violence.  As proud New Jerseyans, we refuse to accept the status-quo of daily urban and suburban killings carried out primarily with weapons from out-of-state.  We will not let the tragedy of Sandy Hook and the memory of those innocent young victims and their teachers be forgotten.  We believe, truly, that “freedom from gun violence is a civil right” – and a right that our legislators are sworn and obligated to protect.

ABOUT SANDY HOOK PROMISE:
Sandy Hook Promise (SHP) is a non-profit corporation* created by members of the community of Newtown, Connecticut in response to the 12.14.12 shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School.  They promised to do whatever they could to not let this tragedy stand as just another in our country’s history.  Moving forward, the SHP mission is to identify and implement holistic, common sense solutions that will make our community and our country safer from similar acts of violence through education, outreach and grass-roots discussion.   This is the time.
