Runners grin and bare it at frosty four-miler in Morristown

The mercury was in the mid-20s for the Super Sunday 4 Miler in Morristown. But that did not seem to faze Karl Leitz one bit. The Jersey City man turned in a very respectable 27-minute time…clad in the merest hint of a bathing suit.

Somehow, he landed without ice on his wings.

“There might be some shrinkage,” he said, presumably referring to his nostrils. “I might thaw out by this evening.”

Karl was among 1,100 participants in the second edition of this Super Bowl warmup event, according to figures tallied by co-organizer Chris Russo, who also masterminds the annual Superhero Half Marathon.

Kathleen Meneses of Denville ran four miles with a cloth football on her head. She planned to reward herself with steak and chicken wings while cheering for the 49ers against the Ravens.

Ben Clarke of Morristown won the men’s division, while Greta Sieve topped the ladies category.

Greta thought Sunday’s weather was “lovely.”

You would think so, too, if you just moved to Morristown from… Minnesota.

“I love it” in New Jersey,” said Greta, 25, who came here two months ago from the St. Paul area. “I never thought I would say it. People are really nice and really friendly. I needed a change from Minnesota, and it was a good one.”

Morristown’s Community Soup Kitchen will receive some proceeds from the day’s one-mile walk/fun run. Staffers’ eyes lit up when Team Farm crossed the finish line wearing chicken masks. Perhaps the kitchen ladies imagined the joggers bobbing in a pot of soup.

There was some method to Team Farm’s madness.  David Quirk of Long Valley completed the hilly course on a scooter, wearing a backpack loaded with bricks. The idea, he said, was to emphasize the burden carried by America’s wounded warriers and their families.
