Morristown activists are organizing rides to Saturday’s One Million Moms for Gun Control rally in Jersey City.

“People were waiting to be galvanized for activism on this issue,” Pam Hasegawa told the Morristown Council on Tuesday.

Last week, Pam co-organized the first meeting of the Morris Area Community Committee Against Gun Violence, formed in response to the massacre of 26 students and faculty members at an elementary school in Newtown, CT.

Forty-two people attended the gathering at the Morristown & Township Library; “20 to 30 more” have joined since then, she said.

“If what happened in Newtown had happened in Morristown, we would have had 1,000 people at the meeting. We would have had to use the Green,” Pam said. “It’s time for the country to unite around reasonable laws on guns and violence.”

People who need rides on Jan. 26 should meet behind town hall at 9 am, Pam said. The rally starts at 11 am at Lincoln Park in Jersey City.

Councilwoman Rebecca Feldman, the other organizer of last week’s meeting, said she may attend the Million Moms rally in Washington DC.

Morristown Police Chief Pete Demnitz told the new committee that people should learn survival skills to recognize and escape potentially deadly situations.
