Some unscheduled rogue fireworks momentarily derailed the new Philharmonic of New Jersey. But Monday’s show went on, celebrating First Night Morris 2013 in Morristown under the direction of conductor Leon Hyman. Undaunted, Hyman and the audience at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church enjoyed the beautiful strains of Mozart, Bach, Copland, Grieg and Anderson.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart took spectators back to the 18th century, through the storytelling of Dennis Kobray. Bewigged and brocaded, Kobray treated the audience at the Church of the Redeemer to a glimpse of what it was like for Mozart, a child prodigy, growing up in Europe as a talented composer and musician.

DonnaJo Landes of Bernardsville, enjoying her first First Night, enjoyed a flashback to an earlier time in her life through The British Invasion Tribute at the Mayo Performing Arts Center.

“They sounded just like the Beatles, the Doors and the Rolling Stones, but my favorite was the Moody Blues’ Tuesday Afternoon,” she said.

The Gods of Jazz Guitar were a jazz connoisseur’s delight: The Frank Vignola Duo and special guest Bucky Pizzarelli  wowed spectators at the Presbyterian Church with their virtuoso playing and comic renditions of two old time favorites, It Had to Be You and Tangerine.

Stand-up comic Moody McCarthy wove his Irish heritage into everyday life, engaging the audience at the Morris County Hall of Records with funny routines that sent revelers home on a happy note.
