Who knew tubas were so festive? Merry Tuba Christmas proved it on the Morristown Green

But by George, it’s never experienced anything quite like a Merry Tuba Christmas

A tip of our Santa cap to Doug Rutan, Morristown High band director, and guest conductor Matt Paterno, for pulling off a holiday concert unlike any we’ve ever seen.

Some 60 tubists and euphonistas, from ages 10 to 80 and from as far away as Long Island, converged Saturday on the historic Green for a wintry 45-minute carol toot.

Tuba jokes were blowing around like the sheet music in the blustery wind. (Q: What’s the difference between a chainsaw and a tuba? A: You can tune a chainsaw.)

But we left the Green with a newfound appreciation for these instruments and their devotees. Sometimes, having bass instincts is a noble thing.
